Benji Hicks kicks off Southern Nationals run; podium finish at Wythe Raceway
Embarking on the entire Schaeffer's Oil Southern National Series schedule, Benji Hicks opened up his championship chase at Beckley (W.Va.) Motor Speedway on Friday afternoon for the Black Gold 53.
With 26 Late Models checked in for the tour's first event, Hicks qualified sixth-fastest in his group before finishing runner-up in his heat race. Starting sixth in the first $10,053-to-win feature of the summer, Benji managed a Top-10 finish in ninth.
Traveling to the very fast Wythe Raceway (Rural Retreat, Va.) on Saturday, Benji started the 53-lap feature from the fifth-row and quietly made his way inside the Top-3. Hicks scored a podium as he trailed Chris Madden and Donald McIntosh while Dale McDowell and Mike Benedum completed the Top-5.
Capping off the first weekend with the series, Hicks recorded a 12th-place finish at Volunteer Speedway (Bulls Gap, Tenn.) on Sunday.
Benji currently sits fourth in the point standings.
